Singing games

During her time in East Lothian, Lynda was Area Choir Co-ordinator and was responsible for the setting up and running of a new partnership with the National Youth Choir of Scotland. This involved forming six Area Choirs based on the Kodály method.

Our singing games classes can be either as an after school club or as an integral part of weekly lessons. These are most appropriate for primary 1-4 children but can be adapted to suit other ages. Each session will consist of musicianship training based on the Kodály method.

Zoltán Kodály was a Hungarian Composer and Educator who advocated that music education should start nine months before the child is born, be organised in a systematic and structured way throughout the school years, and begin with the most natural instrument in the world - the voice.

The child is taught in a logical, sequential manner with musical concepts being introduced at first through play. Then, when the child is ready, musical concepts are introduced consciously and are practised. The emphasis is ultimately on singing and playing for fun. The importance of participating in these singing games cannot be overestimated. Singing helps to develop many skills, including speech and vocabulary, but the games also help develop co-ordination, social interaction, and co-operation with others.
